In Mr. John Barker’s Year 9 Supplemental English classes, students have read the novel “the Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne. This novel is set in the concentration camp of Auschwitz during the Holocaust in World War 2.
To further their understanding of the senseless killing of people during such times, students were set the task of researching a genocide. Examples of these included those committed in Armenia, Rwanda, Cambodia, the United States, China, and other areas of the world. Students looked to answer the Wh-questions to do this; for example, where and when it happened, who committed the genocide and who they committed it against, what the result was, and, perhaps most importantly, why it happened.
Students then synthesised the information they had gathered into posters, which they submitted to get a maximum of 10% of their final grades. They were given time in class to complete this sizable task, with many students producing very informative and eye-catching examples.
