Year 9 English – Rock and Pop Narratives
Tuesday, November 14, 2017
This semester at Assumption College English Program, Grade 9 students are studying Rock and Pop Narratives in Supplemental English with Mr. David Henderson. This language arts course allows the class to learn about a variety of world issues and themes as well as the study of ‘song poetry’. For example, last week’s song “Hotel California” ends with the lyrics:
“We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave”.
The thematic notion of people “programming” or living under a ‘system of control’ is also reflected by this week’s lyrical selection “War Pigs”. Here, the narrative is highly critical of the politicians and generals who lead their countries and people into war by “poisoning their brainwashed minds”. However, the writing also reflects the ‘poetic justice’ or ‘karma’ that will eventually return to punish these psychopathic and tyrannical leaders via the fateful judgement of God himself, hence the “Hand of God has struck the hour”.
Students are due to complete homework on another well-known song (“Wind of Change”) next week because they will miss classes due to scout camp. All exercises and materials are readily available for Grade 9 classes online via Schoology.
