Year 3 Science: Plants and Life Processes – Video!
Monday, September 2, 2019
Over the past few weeks in Science, Year 3 have been learning all about plants and life processes. We have studied various parts of plants including the roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits; focusing specifically on the jobs that these plant parts are responsible for.
Part of the lesson on stems requires students to cary out an investigation into how stems absorb and transport water and nutrients. This fun experiment uses a celery plant and water mixed with food colouring. The celery plant absorbs and transports the coloured water over a few days until all of the stem is coloured.
This simple and child-centred experiment allows students to easily see how the stem of a plant is a living thing and has a specific job to do.
Some of our Year 3 students filmed themselves carrying out the experiment and then they shared the video with the rest of the school during the Friday morning English assembly. Everyone involved had a lot of fun!
