Year 10 – Biological Molecules
November 30, 2018
This week at Assumption College English Programme, Mr Ash’s Year 10 Biology students have been learning about biological molecules, with a focus on carbohydrate structure. They were required to utilise skills from their chemistry classes to draw complex molecular diagrams of glucose, to help them learn how the molecules join together to make complex carbohydrates such as glycogen and starch which are found in living organisms.
In order to provide a more hands-on experience of this subject, we used the molecular modelling kits to make molecules of glucose, and demonstrate how these are joined together or broken apart in biological processes. Being able to physically see the bonds and atoms in this activity gave the students a much deeper understanding of these chemical reactions.
