Today, Assumption College English Program conducted three ‘Wai Kru’ (Teacher Appreciation Day) ceremonies. The ceremonies were held in the Multipurpose Room in the Trinity Building.
Primary students participated in two ceremonies in the morning. The ceremony in the afternoon was for secondary students in Years 7 – 12. In the afternoon, ACEP Student Council were also appointed, Year 10 students were granted an ‘ACEP Pin’ to mark their transition to upper secondary school, and the leaders of this year’s coloured sporting teams were symbolically presented with their team’s flag.
During those special ceremonies, speeches were made by the students in Thai, English and Chinese to emphasize the trilingual education that our school offers.
Piyanat Rungphetviparvadee from class 11/3, the recently elected President of ACEP Student Council, led the students in each ceremony in a traditional ‘Wai Kru’ chant.
The highlight of the today’s events was the presentation of flower arrangements to the teachers by student representatives from each class. The arrangements were presented in a traditional Thai manner.
Bro. Dr. Pisutr Vapiso (Director) also spoke to the students about the meaning of today’s ceremony and the value that Thai culture places on the role of teachers in a child’s life. He also thanked the teachers for their hard work and explained the meaning of the flower arrangements they all received:
Ixora flowers, which form pointed buds while closed, symbolise sharp wit and wisdom.
Bermuda grass, which is very resilient and grows rapidly, symbolises perseverance and the ability to learn.
Popped rice symbolises discipline.
Eggplant flowers, which bow low when they bear fruit, symbolise respect and humility.
At the end of the ceremony, students and teachers enjoyed watching a video showing teachers and students and also last year’s ‘Wai Kru’ ceremony.
During the ceremony for the Secondary students, one of our alumni, Apisapol Intharakanchit, spoke about his years at ACEP and thanked the Brothers and teachers for all the support he and his friends received.
We would like to thank all the students for their participation in today’s ceremonies and wish all the teachers happy ‘Wai Kru’ Day!
