Sharing Evenly: Introduction to Division in Year 2

Recently the children in Year 2 have started learning division in Maths for the first time ever. To introduce the concept teachers employed the strategy of children using manipulatives (plastic blocks or counters) to share into equal groups or divide.

Manipulatives not only allow students to construct their own models for mathematical ideas and processes, they also provide a way to show these models to the teacher and other students. Manipulatives also engage students and increase both interest in and enjoyment of Mathematics. Students with the opportunity to use manipulatives say that they are more interested in Mathematics. Long-term interest in Mathematics leads to increased mathematical ability.

It is wonderful to see the students sharing what they have learned with each other during Mathematics group work activities.
