Measuring Madness in Year 1

Friday, December 18, 2020
Year 1 started Test period 3 in Maths learning all about Length and Measuring. Students were first introduced to measuring by comparing the different lengths and heights of 2 and then 3 objects. Students learnt new vocabulary like tall, longer and shortest and were able to use this new terminology in a length wars flashcard game.
Next, students were taught the 3 important rules for measuring and then used this new knowledge to practice measuring various items around their classroom. To prepare students for measuring with standard units of measurement in Year 2, we start in Year 1 using non-standard units. First, students used their hands and feet to measure larger objects and later they used cube blocks to measure smaller items.
The students always enjoy learning with these types of hands on activities and we can’t wait to practice some more in Year 1!
