Measurement in Year 1
November 6, 2018
Year 1 students have been learning about measurement in Maths here at Assumption College English Program. We started by learning about the concepts of longer, taller and shorter. It is important that students learn these concepts before moving on to actually measuring objects.
To prepare students for measuring with standard units of measurement, we started by using non-standard units. First, the students measured different classroom items with their hands and feet. Next they used blocks. Before getting to work and measuring, the students had to first estimate or guess how long each object was. Estimating is an important but difficult skill to learn.
The students really enjoy these hands on activities and they really did a great job!
