First Steps of Reading in Year 1
June 11, 2019
Our Year 1 students are well on their way to becoming remarkable readers here at Assumption College English Program.
Even though we haven’t even been at school a full month yet, the students have already begun reading simple words for homework. The teachers start by teaching the letter sounds using our Jolly Phonics programme, and the students learn to read simple 3 and 4 letter words. As we learn more letters, we learn to read even more words!
The students will continue to learn like this in Term 1, before moving on to reading books and spelling tests in Term 2. The teachers are very happy with the fast progress that students are showing!
The teachers like to use technology to enhance our literacy teaching, and we are focusing on two apps – ‘Epic’ and ‘Teach your Monster to Read’. These apps allow the students to work and read at their own level, and they practice important skills while having fun. We encourage parents to use these apps at home too.
Finally, we would like to thank all the Year 1 parents for their help with reading homework. Please continue reading with your child every night.
