2017 ASEAN Day and National Thai Language Day Activities

Today, marks the 5 year tradition of the annual ASEAN day celebration at Assumption College English Program. ASEAN day is celebrated August 8th of every year in order to showcase the subjects of social studies, religion and culture in the ASEAN regions. This year marks the 50th year of the ASEAN community. The ASEAN founding fathers signed the ASEAN declaration on August 8th, 1967 with Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Currently, the ASEAN community is made up of 10 different countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines , Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia) in South East Asia. The community works to lower the proportion of people living in poverty, increase the enrollment rate of students in primary schools, and much more.
The ceremony began with speeches and was followed up with several dances. Students from all year levels participated. Students dressed in traditional ASEAN clothing. Many students wore traditional Thai attire while many others had on clothing from Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, and others.
After the performances, Bro. Dr. Pisut Vapiso, Director, spoke of the importance of the ASEAN community, as well as the importance of maintaining the Thai identity. He thanked everyone for organizing and participating in the event. Afterwards, students had about 30 minutes to enjoy the food stalls and cultural activities from various countries set up by the Year 8, Year 9, and Year 10 students.
